SYSTEMIC FACTORS: Diabetes
- Water retention (denture does not fit well); delayed healing; prolonged
bleeding.
Osteoporosis - Poor ridge support; quicker resorption of the bone; may
have to be tooth supported
Cancer - Dry mouth; ulcers from radiation; radiation caries;
Glossitis; Stomatitis
Leukemia - Decreased blood cell counts; delayed healing; more prone to
infections; inflammation
Aids - Oral candidlasis; ANUG; HIV gingivitis; Petechiae on attached
gingiva; inflammation
Aging - Dry mouth (xerostomia); trouble with patient mobility to clean
partial denture; damage of the clasps from poor handling
Epilepsy - Overgrowth of gingiva in anterior especially the buccal
surface; correlated with poor oral hygiene; malpositioning of the teeth; poor patient
mobility (problems cleaning partial dentures)
Xerostomia - Dry mouth ( levodopa); retention reduction; soreness;
ulceration
NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS:
Cerebral Palsy - spasticity, muscles contract involuntarily; not
smooth movement; rigid movements; plaque accumulation; calculus; decay |
NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS: Continue
Parkinsons - inability to control facial muscles; dry mouth
(levodopa); grinding of teeth; tremors
Bells Palsy - bruxism; caries; Malocclusion; periodontal problems;
oral motor dysfunction; joint disturbances
Multiple Sclerosis - spastic movements; hand movements uncoordinated;
par aesthesia; poor oral hygiene; ulceration; xerostomia; gingival overgrowth
SKELETAL DISORDERS
Pagets Disease - enlarged maxilla; spread of dentition; increased
resorption; radiographic; (cotton wool appearance; root resorption, hypercementosis;
lamina dura may be completely absent; teeth may be mobile
Rheumatoid Arthritis - increased susceptibility to infections;
bruxism; occusal imbalance; limited TMJ movement.
